Guiding Your Child’s Smile at the Right Age
Every smile develops on its own timeline, and for kids, that means certain orthodontic problems are easiest to address before all the permanent teeth have come in. At Trapnell Orthodontics in Spanish Fork, we recommend that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by around age 7, or as soon as a parent notices anything unusual about how their child's teeth or jaw are developing.
At this stage, the first adult molars have typically erupted, giving our experts a clearer picture of how the upper and lower teeth are likely to fit together as your child continues to grow. An early evaluation doesn't necessarily mean treatment starts right away. In many cases, it simply gives us a starting point for monitoring your child's smile until the timing is right.
SCHEDULE YOUR CHILD'S EVALUATION
Why an Early Evaluation Matters
- Early Problem Detection
Spotting an issue while your child is still growing often means it can be corrected more easily and with less involved treatment than if it's addressed later. - Ongoing Monitoring
If treatment isn't needed yet, we'll recommend a schedule of checkups so our Spanish Fork team can keep an eye on your child's developing smile and step in at the right moment if a problem develops.
Orthodontic Issues We Look For in Young Patients
- Overbites, where the upper teeth extend too far past the lower teeth
- Crowded or overlapping teeth that don't have enough room to align properly
- Open bites, where the upper and lower teeth don't meet when biting down
- Gummy smiles, where excess gum tissue is visible when a child smiles
