What Changes Once Your Braces Are On
Getting braces doesn't mean overhauling your entire routine, but a few daily habits do shift once brackets and wires come into the picture. Knowing what to expect ahead of time makes the adjustment period less of a guessing game, and it helps keep your treatment moving on schedule. From eating certain foods to maintaining proper brushing and flossing habits, small changes can make a noticeable difference throughout your orthodontic journey.
Understanding these adjustments early helps you stay comfortable and protect your smile while your teeth move into their new positions. Our Provo team walks every patient through these basics after bonding day, but it never hurts to have a reference to come back to as questions come up along the way.

Keeping Your Teeth and Gums Healthy in Braces
Oral hygiene matters more once you're in braces, since brackets and wires create extra spots where food and plaque can build up. Brushing and flossing consistently is the only real way to make sure your teeth and gums come out of treatment as healthy as they went in.
Beyond your home routine, staying on top of regular dental checkups matters just as much. We recommend seeing your family or pediatric dentist about every six months during treatment, or more often if your orthodontist recommends it.
Eating With Braces
Right after your braces go on, your teeth may feel a little tender, so sticking to softer foods for the first few days tends to help. That sensitivity fades quickly, and most patients are back to their normal routine within a week or so.
Once you've adjusted, you can eat most of what you normally would, with a few categories worth limiting to protect your brackets and wires:
- Chewy foods: bagels, hard licorice, beef jerky, chewy energy bars
- Crunchy foods: ice, frozen foods
- Sticky foods: caramel, chewy candy, certain gums
- Hard foods: nuts, hard candy, hard energy bars
